Nadia Comaneci gets the first perfect 10

Nadia Comaneci is Romania’s darling. She represented her country in world competitions in gymnastics. Nadia achieved the first perfect 10 score in an Olympics event.

She started her career at a very young age when she was noticed by a coach while she was playing with a friend. At the time, she was only 6. He recognized her talent even at that tender age. Of course, he was not wrong. When she was just 8, she participated in her first competition where she managed 13th place.

Two years later, Nadia participated in her first International competition, and many more followed. However, what made her famous was the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. When she finished her routine, on the score bar “1.00” instead of “10.00” appeared, only because the manufacturers of the score bar had assumed that a perfect 10 would never be possible. Well, Nadia made the impossible possible!

After coming back to Romania, she won another titles but she was never as good as in her young years. Forced to live under a very strict communist regime, she was not allowed to do anything without the approval of the leader, Nicolae Ceausescu. She was forced to move to another city and train with another coach, and this took her away from gymnastics. Slowly, she lost her skills and since she was kept under close supervision by the government, she decided to escape from Romania.

In 1989, just before the revolution, Nadia Comaneci and a few friends escaped from the country and went to America, where they were accepted with open arms. Now she has dual citizenship and she is a happy woman!
