Alex Biega signs 2-year extension

The Vancouver Canucks defied expectations when they skipped moving any of their top defensemen at the trade deadline. They did something that was totally expected of them and that was handing out a two-year extension to Alex Biega so they don't have to deal with him hitting the open market come summer time.

The two-year extension is reportedly worth an annual value of $825,000. In 31 games this season, the 29-year-old has made six assists. In total, Biega has had one goal and 16 assists in all 125 NHL games he has played with Vancouver.

For the season, Biega tops the Canucks with 3.1 hits per game. He is also sixth on the team in terms of blocks with a respectable 1.4 per game. Expect the Canucks to be in the running for making a run at trading for top prospect Olli Juolevi, who is very close to making his much-awaited debut at the NHL.

Biega was originally drafted by Buffalo in the fifth round of the 2006 draft. He would spend years in the AHL with Utica, Rochester, and Portland. In total, Biega played 348 AHL games. The defenseman was the captain of the Utica Comets during the 2015-16 season after serving as the team's alternate captain the year before.

The Canucks are looking to be big spenders with their contracts for Henrik and Daniel Sedin expiring soon. Although their cap space could easily be filled if they decide to get Pouliot and Stecher long-term deals as soon as their respective contracts expire. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how the Vancouver Canucks maneuver their way through draft day.
