Hockey Team Wins Florida Championship after School Shooting

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School needed something big to help lift the school's spirits after a school shooting back in February left 17 people dead. They got just that and more after the Stoneman Douglas varsity hockey team pulled off the impossible and won the Lightning High School Hockey League Tier 1 state title in Florida.

The Stoneman Douglas boys entered the tournament as a No. 4 seed, which was nearer to the bottom than to the top. However, that did not matter to them. They first upset the top-seeded East Lake 3-1 before beating Jesuit 7-4 to claim the title.

To pay homage to Joaquin Oliver who had died during the school shooting, the entire team dyed their hair yellow. This may have been exactly the lucky charm that the team needed to pull off what can only be described as a miracle run. With the win, the Stoneman Douglas qualified for the national high school championship tournament in Minnesota this March.

The turnout could not have been scripted any better for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Just 11 days prior to winning the title, the high school found itself in the middle of the national spotlight after a tragedy where 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed seventeen people and wounded seventeen more using an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. This has easily become one of the deadliest school massacres in the history of the world.

One sports title will not wash away the blood that has been spilled as a result of the tragedy. Nor will it undo the grief or loss that families and friends suffered. At the very least, it will bring a smile and a bit of hope to an entire community that is still recovering from the hair-raising event that unfolded earlier in February.

The shooting suspect is currently being held without bail on 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.
