Two Ethiopians win Boston Marathon

Running a marathon is a big life accomplishment for many, and one of the most prestigious in America is the Boston Marathon. Almost all runners train to either finish, or beat a personal best. It’s easy to forget that it is indeed a race, and there will be a winner who crosses the finish line first. In this year’s Boston Marathon, two Ethiopians earned that honor on both the men and female sides.

This was the first time in 120 years that citizens of the country accomplished this feat. On the men’s side, it was Lemi Berhanu Hayle who won with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 45 seconds. For the women, Atsede Baysa crossed the finish line at 2 hours, 29 minutes and 19 seconds. This was not Baysa’s first big win, as she’s also been victorious in the Paris and Chicago Marathons. It’s worth noting that Kenyans tend to dominate these big races, so it was a huge accomplishment for these fellow Ethiopians to represent their nation so well.

Of course, the terrorist attack on the 2013 Boston Marathon is still vivid memories for many. In a great sign of healing and determination, bombing victims Adriana Haslett and Patrick Downes ran in this year’s race after each lost a leg in that attack. Eight year old Martin Richard was killed in the attack and was honored by many who ran this year and by local Boston athletes as well.
